This Memorial Day Blog honors the patriotic men and women of our armed forces who have sacrificed their lives for their country.

When I am inspired to create a 40s Hollywood – Veronica Lake, Lana Turner and other silver screen sirens of that era come to mind The focus is on a gorgeous, strong red lip, but a red that a bride can actually wear is essential. Bridal Makeovers is all about  beautiful, sexy and feminine brides and nothing portrays a woman’s beauty like the ability to wear a truly stunning and universally flattering red on her wedding day.

BRIDAL MAKEOVERS has the deepest respect for those that have served and those that currently serve in our military, which is why we want to celebrate you and your loved ones with this Memorial Day. We hope that you can all spend it with your families and friends. To those of you who cannot, especially those of you who are serving right now, we remember your sacrifice and humbled by it. To commemorate the holiday show off your beautiful smile by wearing red lipstick.  I have a fun little wedding inspiration roundup for brides who want bright and bold for their lips on the big day! Red is a very strong color. It represents the blood shed in this country to obtain freedom but, it’s also a classic vintage lip color suitable for your vintage wedding especially if if you are going after a 40’s bombshell style for your bridal makeup look.

During World War II wearing red lipstick became a militaristic strategy and tactic. Red lipstick redefined what America was fighting for: protection of freedom, democracy, AND  beauty. Red lipstick became American women’s and American cosmetic ads’ war paint.

Even the names of the lipsticks were patriotic with names such as “Fighting Red” and “Patriotic Red”. Lipstick was also one of the only pieces of make-up that ‘wasn’t’ rationed during WW2 as it was seen to be patriotic to maintain beauty on the home front.Red lipstick gave women empowerment and independence. It redefined the role of women in society.

Red lipstick led the way to a new frontier in fashion and sexuality. It allowed a woman to do a man’s job and be lady-like.

Thinking about a vintage look for your wedding? It’s time to pucker up because red lips help create a high-impact look and wearing it is a definite way to make an absolutely sexy statement. It is an especially great choice for brides that don’t want a heavy eye. Just throw on a pair of false lashes, a light sweep of blush on your cheeks, and a red lip will create a beautiful look. Think pearl harbor, veils and a matte red lipstick!

Add a touch of vintage glamour to your makeup with a bold red hue on your lips.

I love the look of red lipstick on my bridal clients!  I can make them look so glamorous and vintage. Red lips have stood the test of time, they are a classic look that will never go out of fashion. I just can’t get enough of stylish brides who dare to don red lipstick on their wedding day! Red lips look just as good with a vintage, lace dress and pearls as they do with a modern dress and statement headpiece.

What have we taken from this era and brought to today’s wedding fashionable hair and makeup? I find that the classic screen goddess still inspires our glamorous brides today. The red lips, long wavy hair, clean makeup is definitely a look that our brides of 2013 love and ask me to recreate for them.

So if you considering going for a bold red lip play down eye make up with neutral colors and let your lips do the talking! A light eye, which might embrace a strong penciled brow, with a polished foundation that includes some sculpting and contouring is all you need.

All about red lips and brides. Pros and Cons

Yes, this controversial color can be worn on your wedding day but, be aware of the following:

  • Red lips take a bit of getting use to. I suggest you start experimenting now because the wrong red lipstick shade and application can be gaudy and make you feel super self conscious on your wedding day. The more often you wear red lips now the more confident you become for your big day.
  • Red lips could also leave a trail of kisses on your groom’s lips. And you know how much guys just love this look!
  • If not applied correctly you’ll have to keep asking your bridesmaids to be on hand to check for red lipstick on your teeth… Not a good look!
  • Remember, even though classic red is universally flattering, try out different shades of it during a trial run, your wedding day is not a day for experimenting. The more often you wear that perfect shade of red lipstick now,  the more confident you become for your big day.

What's the secret to giving him that Hollywood kiss with out smearing it all over the groom's lips during the ceremony?

Lip sealant – I apply it on all of my brides’ lipstick to help it last longer and to prevent the color from kissing off, feathering or bleeding. The trick to doing this is gently blot lipstick primer, with lips slightly parted, apply a thin layer to outer lip. I  apply lip-liner as a base-coat to the bride’s  entire lip area. Then I apply the red lipstick with a brush and blot again. I wipe my brush to dip into the sealant and I apply a thin layer and let it set for 15 seconds with lips slightly parted. And voila, her lipstick will LITERALLY last all day!

And remember, preparation is key. Make sure you exfoliate and moisturize your lips well. Let your balm sink in before applying your lipstick to avoid unsightly dryness or the lipstick sliding off. A primer makes it easier to paint your lips. It makes the lipstick go on beautifully, it’s easier to draw it on and allows you to wear it longer.
