Bridal Inspiration: The Enduring Influence of Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe is the epitome of glamour. The screen siren, who taught all of my brides-to-be that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, is getting my creative ideas flowing.

Today, a half-century later,  this 1950s bombshell is a source of inspiration for a new generation of brides.

2012 is the 50th anniversary of the late great blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe’s passing. I’ve been doing professional makeup for over 20 years and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked to do the  “Marilyn Monroe look”  since she  represents glamour, style, and elegance – qualities that most brides look to embody on their wedding day.

This blog is dedicated to the beautiful, wonderful, and talented Marilyn Monroe. This is the first in my Hollywood Icon series and it was inspired by Marilyn Monroe. After 50 years her legacy seems to be bigger than ever, and her memory will never die. She has left a huge impact on this world. From smoldering to demure, Marilyn Monroe channeled every facet of femininity, often using makeup to express herself.

When it comes to bonding with my 17 year old daughter there is nothing we like to do more than shopping for makeup. This blog has become an outlet for my obsession with all things beauty.  And since both my daughter and I tend to obsess with the latest releases from our favorite brands, I thought I would share about last month’s launch party.

MAC Cosmetics celebrated Marilyn Monroe’s iconic beauty look with a limited-edition collection. This collection channels Marilyn Monroe’s luster and sex appeal in shades and formulas that evoke that flawless beauty by paying homage to the legendary bombshell with lipsticks ranging from rosy nudes to deep plums, dramatic black liners in liquid and kohl formulas, and chic polishes and powders. This bombshell-worthy range references Marilyn’s iconic beauty and features sleek black and white packaging bearing an image of the star’s “The Black Sitting.”

Why is Marilyn's look that's so timeless and enduring?

Why is Marilyn’s look that’s so timeless and enduring?

Marilyn used a lot of really interesting tricks to get to where she was as a beauty. How did she get those pale peach highlights designed to create that oh-so-covetable Hollywood glow in her skin? Believe it or not, she used Vaseline all over her face, under her makeup, before she went on camera because it gave her a glow that she really liked. She also used this sort of like hormone cream that made her skin tighter, but the hormones in it actually gave her quite a bit of peach fuzz on her face. The director would try to get her to remove it, but she insisted on keeping it because she thought it gave her a nice sort of a fuzzy glow around her face to make her look more ethereal. And it worked! Don’t worry brides, no Vaseline or hormones in my kit.

Nothing stirs the emotions and touches the heart quite like Marilyn Monroe’s timeless beauty and iconic style.

Marilyn’s long time friend and make-up artist Allan ‘Whitey’ Snyder used many tricks on Marilyn to give her the iconic look she is known for today. Whitey would have to blend up to five different shades of lipstick to get the perfect red. — like one deeper on the outer edge of her mouth, another one in the center just to make her lips look really dimensional. Whitey would draw outside of Marilyn’s natural lip curve using a white pencil in order to give her ‘fuller’ lips. You know, we all think of her using black eyeliner, but she actually used a dark brown eyeliner and used a white pencil on the inside of her eye to make her eye look larger.

Marilyn’s hair is an inspiration for lots of glamorous and vintage-style looks – from the color to the loose curls and coiff. The secret is that you use the best holding products to make sure everything stays big and in place. Gentlemen prefer blondes, so they say, but they also love brunettes and redheads, as we well know.

So regardless of your hair color, I believe brides can carry off a Marilyn-Monroe-inspired look.

Just because your having a white wedding, doesn’t mean you cant have red lips. However, wearing red lipstick can be daunting, but the key is to wear lip liner to stop it from bleeding. Make sure lips are exfoliated and moisturized, then carefully line the lips with a sharp pencil of similar shade to the red lipstick you’d like to wear, and be sure to follow your natural lip line. Then, fill in the entire lip area with the pencil — this will give your lipstick better staying power. Finally, apply your lipstick! And if there’s one thing Marilyn has taught us, remember to blot the excess with a tissue.
