Brides, Please Take Care Of Your Skin. It Is The Canvas I Will Paint On!

I am often asked “What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to a bride?”

Enjoy your beautiful fresh face and relax knowing you will look perfect on your big day!

Within each bride there exists the potential for perfect balance, a state of well-being that radiates from inside out. A bride’s skin needs pampering. I am a firm believer of “loving your skin and it will love you back”. The effects of a facial go far beyond rest and relaxation. While you might not have the time or your wedding budget may not allow you to splurge on the relaxing and beneficial spa treatment, it’s still important to give your skin a thorough cleanse every now and again, even if you do it yourself. So, today I would like to share simple steps for an at-home facial, so you can achieve healthier and more radiant bridal skin in minutes, sans spa. Steaming should absolutely be a part of your regular facial regimen. Estheticians and avid spa-goers understand its benefits, but you can skip the bill and do your own 10 minute at-home steam on a monthly basis. The process allows toxins to exit pores, softens skin and preps your face for a nourishing mask or fabulous moisturizer.

How to give yourself a proper facial at home:

What are the benefits of facials? Facials involve a cleansing procedure, a massage and steam, and the application of a face mask. What they help to do is remove the dead, dull outer layer of cells that make up the skin’s surface or epidermis along with pollutants. The massage, which is an important part of a facial, helps blood circulation, which in turn aids lymphatic drainage (the removal of toxins and waste from the body). A facial massage also relaxes the facial muscles and is very important to delay the onset of wrinkles.

The face is steamed during a facial for two main reasons. Firstly, steam helps the skin absorb cream better. Secondly, it helps in softening blackheads and whiteheads so that they can be removed easily. The application of a face mask in the end helps tone and clarifies the skin. Pampering yourself in the comfort of your own home is big business nowadays and while most would love to spend a day in a luxury spa it can be very expensive. Fortunately it’s not hard to recreate the experience and it needn’t cost a fortune to prepare to radiate beauty from within as you discover how to reveal the glow you were born with.

CREATE THE MOOD

A weekend day is when you will probably benefit most from beauty treatments as it gives you time to relax and forget the week’s stresses.

Heat towels and a dressing gown over a radiator before using them. This will relax and warm your body as well as boosting blood circulation to help flush out toxins. Lighting a scented candle or oil burner will help calm your mood and relieve tension. I like soothing lavender and ylang ylang because has a sweet, soft, flowery fragrance that has made it a romantic favorite. In Indonesia, the petals are often strewn across a marriage bed. Ylang ylang is extremely effective in calming and bringing about a sense of relaxation, and it may help with releasing feelings of anger, tension, and nervous irritability. You can also add essentials oil to your cleansing water. Three to five drops should suffice. To soften dry skin, add rose. For combination skin, add balancing grapefruit. For acne issues, add tea tree oil.

THE ESSENTIALS

Cleanse:

First remove all make-up without stripping the skin, to leave it radiant, soft and silky-smooth. Did you know that you can safely and efficiently remove your makeup using coconut oil? It is incredibly beneficial for your skin. In order to remove your makeup, apply a little bit of liquid coconut oil directly on your dry skin (with makeup on) and gently massage your face for about a minute or two to dissolve your makeup. Every cleanser may not suit your skin type and can result in acne or dull looking skin so be careful of what you apply to your skin even if it is as simple as a cleanser. Look for a brightening facial wash that eliminates impurities and enhances the effects of other brightening products. Cleanse skin and cover the face with a warm, damp flannel for a minute to soften pores. Bonus points if you focus on blackheads, but not pimples: at this point, don’t be tempted to squeeze a spot. It’s an inflamed follicle filled with (bacteria) puss and squeezing it risks spreading the infection and causing more damage to the delicate surrounding tissue (meaning more pimples and possibly scarring). If you want to try and remove blackheads, this is the time to do it. Fill a large bowl of hot water and place a towel over your head. Lean your face over the bowl using the towel to confine the steam to your face. Relax in this position for up to 5 minutes. Soak a washcloth with warm water. Ring out the washcloth and place over your face for one to two minutes, allowing the steam to open, hydrate and soften the skin. Repeat this process two to three times or until skin feels soft and supple. Use a tissue around your fingers (never ‘go in bare’, as this can cause skin trauma and scarring) and be gentle – if they won’t come out this time, they will likely come out the next time. Next, exfoliate the skin for 1-2 minutes. It’s important to cleanse and exfoliate the skin first, as this offers better absorption of following skin-care products.

The first step to beautiful skin is exfoliation to remove dead cells that dull the skin’s appearance.

Exfoliate:

Follow up with a light exfoliation by using a scrub or good peel that is designed to exfoliate your skin, removing the most outer layer of dull dry skin, revealing your new healthy skin. A peel will also even out your skin tone, minimize the appearance of fine lines, give you a healthy glow, minimize enlarged pores, and improve the overall texture of your skin. Use as part of your weekly skin care. Never use a harsh friction scrub exfoliant if you are sensitive or have infected spots (lesions). It’s important to choose your exfoliant based on the result you are trying to achieve, as well as your skin type and the condition you want to treat. I would recommend asking for professional advice when purchasing for an at-home treatment.

Face Masks:

Perfect after exfoliation as the ingredients in masks can work so much more effectively on the skin. Slather on this facial treat directly following your steam and exfoliation. You don’t have to use just one mask, you can have some great fun applying different ones to the different zones of the face. For the T-zone you may want to use a clay-based mask to draw out impurities, for the lips and eyes a hydrating masque for the dryness and fine lines, and on the cheeks and neck a multi vitamin masque to revitalize the skin. An easy mask for dry, sensitive, combination or oily skin is oatmeal and honey. Simply combine raw oats, a little organic honey and warm water until it creates a slightly sticky paste. A moisturizing mask is great for brides because it will not only illuminate your bridal complexion but, it will also minimize signs of fatigue, refresh and revitalize by “quenching” the thirst of dehydrated skin. After thoroughly cleansing the skin, apply a thick layer over the face and neck. Leave on for 20 minutes, and remove with damp cotton pads or soft towel and complete with toner. Here are some of my favorites you can make in your own kitchen:

Egg white and Oatmeal mask : Take 1 egg white. Mix little oatmeal and a drop of Almond oil. Apply to It is very good for tightening of skin.

Banana Mask: Grind together almond, almond oil, mash a banana into the mix. Add a pinch of saffron if you like. Apply to your face in smooth circular movements so the almond grains work as a scrub. Rinse with cold water so your pores close and tighten.

Toning Mists:

A well-formulated toner can provide truly amazing benefits for your skin. After cleansing, your skin needs is a range of ingredients that restore and repair its surface. Skin can never get too much of these important ingredients, which include antioxidants and skin-repairing substances such as glycerin, fatty acids, and ceramides. The right toner can give your skin a healthy dose of what it needs to look younger, fresher, and smoother, right after cleansing and throughout the day. Toner is meant to be applied to the skin, not wiped aggressively with barely saturated cotton pads! When you apply moisturizer to slightly damp skin, the product will spread farther and absorb more quickly. A great DIY for toning is a combination of sage, peppermint and witch hazel. Sage controls oil, peppermint provides a cool tingle and witch hazel restores the protective layer of the skin. All you have to do is mix 4 ounces of witch hazel with one teaspoon each of sage and peppermint leaves. Leave for three days, then apply on your skin. A couple spritzes before your moisturizing regimen begins and you’ll feel like you just stepped out of a spa.

In addition to staying hydrated and ensuring that your skin is replenished from the inside, apply daily moisturizer to help keep your skin smooth and supple.

Hydrate:

Finish your facial by applying a moisturizer to the face and neck for instant skin softening and smoothing. It’s important to restore moisture to the rest of your face as cleansers can strip healthy oils from your skin. I find it surprising how many brides don’t use a daily moisturizer. I’ve heard a lot of excuses, but the most common is “I have oily skin”. Moisturizing is so important, not only because it moisturizes, nourishes, and hydrates the skin, but also because it balances the natural oils the skin produces. Look for products with vitamin B5 (or niacinamide), which acts as an anti-inflammatory and is fundamental to allowing skin hydrate itself. If you want to go right to your moisturizer, apply a few splashes of cool water following your steam to close your pores (do the same when rinsing your mask). Smooth on your moisturizer to seal the deal. Oh, and don’t try to skip this step, because you’ll completely lose out on the benefits of your steam by not putting moisture back into the skin. All skin types can become dehydrated at any age, and the skin’s moisture content diminishes regularly with time. Moisture is essential to keep skin looking youthful, radiant, and supple.

Serums & Treatments:

Extra treatment products are now applied to target the special needs of your skin; these will be your boosters, serums, night-time clearing gels etc. While some brides may claim they’re too young for anti-aging care, studies have shown that the first signs of aging can start as early as 25, and often shows up at one’s most neglected zones. So, look for a serum that is targeted to do a very specific job, for instance, to treat pigmentation, dehydration, acne, wrinkles and others. Serums improve the skin’s ability to retain moisture. This creates an optimal condition for skin to maximize its natural repair processes. Upon application of the serum, your skin is instantly and deeply hydrated and comforted. Face cleansers and moisturizers don’t matter as much as the serum. That’s because the serum can penetrate deeper layers of skin. The right serum, with enough vitamin C can really make a difference, because it increases collagen cell formation and helps you get younger and smoother looking skin. With each application, the right serum improves your cells’ ability to its optimal activity level in purification so you can have bright and glowing skin for your wedding. Also regular use of a vitamin A derivative will improve the appearance of fine lines and deeper wrinkles that result with aging skin.

Revitalize the Eyes:

The first sign of aging are often times seen around the eyes basically because this is the part of our face that is the finest or thinnest therefore the most vulnerable.Generally speaking, the sooner you start a preventative skin care regime, the greater the result that can be achieved. Improve your skin texture and make your eyes appear more awake by applying an eye cream. Perform a mini-massage around your eyes with an eye cream that contains vitamins and green tea antioxidants. The anti-inflammatory properties will reduce any puffiness and moisture will be restored to the delicate area. Lightly dot the product under the eye area and use your fingertips to gently message the cream in circular upward motions. How to get rid of bags under your eyes and reduce dark circles? Place a slice of cucumber over each eye (keep your eyes closed) while lying down, keep it on for 10-15 minutes, then splash your face with cold water. Cucumber slices are very efficient in reducing eye puffiness and refreshing the skin around your eyes; cucumber also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Benefits of Routine Facials:

  • Relieves stress and muscle tension that causes deep wrinkles
  • Removes environmental impurities from the upper layer of the skin (epidermis)
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduces the effects of sun damage, age spots, and acne scarring
  • Evens out skin tone and complexion
  • Increases blood circulation
  • Promotes collagen production
  • Restores your skin’s radiance
