Get The Cover Look: DIY Bridal Makeup Essentials

Is it possible to look like a sultry bridal magazine cover girl? This is a question many brides ponder. Perhaps not everyone knows that good looks are not enough. Usually, a professional carefully retouches photographs of models by removing imperfections, making skin tone more even, and adding a glamorous glow to the face.

The exact same effect can be achieved with professional makeup artistry. The idea is to look great for your wedding photos, yes, but about the naked eye? I like to shake up things a bit by doing unexpected things like adding a vintage touch to a mostly modern look. My inspiration for this week’s bridal beauty is a chic editorial look. Every “new trend” and every “fresh look” has been recycled time and again through the ages. But just because something isn’t “new” doesn’t mean it can’t be updated and modern looking! Today I will instruct you on how to recreate the latest bridal cover girl’s modern vintage looks. Get your perfect big-day, ultra-glam beauty style here.

DO-IT-YOURSELF BRIDAL MAKEUP ESSENTIALS

1. Ensure skin is radiant and hydrated before applying any makeup. Cleanse and exfoliate skin and follow with an essential/mineral water spritz or an alcohol-free toner, something that is preferably enriched with floral water-like rose. It will refresh, soften, and helps to firm the skin. Once your face is toned, perfectly cleansed, and prepped for your bridal skincare ritual, massage a good quality serum followed by a lightweight moisturizer. Don’t forget a nourishing lip balm.

My top picks are:

  • Caudalie -Vinosource S.O.S Thirst Quenching Serum
  • Chanel Sublimage L’Essence Serum
  • L’OCCITANE Divine Cream (luxurious, yet miraculously lightweight)
  • L’OCCITANE Shea Butter Lip Balm Stic
  • Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist

2. Prime the skin to make sure it looks flawless and make your makeup last longer. Flawless skin is the key to a beautiful face. To have skin that looks like it was run through Photoshop, is a dream for many brides. So unless you are blessed with naturally flawless skin, makeup primer is the answer to all these questions. A makeup primer is a base that prepares your skin and smoothens it out for the makeup. These gel-like substances fill in your pores, even out the complexion and smooth out the fine lines. The result will be a makeup finish that is very smooth and not caked on it on the skin. It acts as a protective layer for the skin. Acne spots, enlarged pores, discoloration and aging spots can all be a thing of the past, now.

My top picks are:

  • Make Up For Ever HD Micro-perfecting Primer
  • Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer
  • Guerlain Meteorites Light Diffusing Perfecting Primer
  • Urban Decay Anti-Aging Eye Shadow Primer Potion

3. For a smooth, flawless finish apply foundation from the center of the face and blend outwards. Use a foundation sponge like the Beauty Blender. Anyone can use this sponge for an easy pro finish that will keep the coverage and finish of your foundation sheer and luminous. Look for a base that’s formulated with light-diffusing spheres because they tend to give a professionally retouched transformed finish. Buildable coverage that allows brides to customize their look is a plus. The best bridal/photo-ready bases are the ones that glide onto skin, leaving it smooth and silky. These types of magical potions that also blur the appearance of large pores and fine lines while giving an airbrush-like coverage, may feel like a splurge, but think how many foundations you’ve bought on a mission for perfect skin. You cannot go wrong with any of my top picks.

These are truly revolutionary luminous technology at its best:

  • Dior – Diorskin Airflash Spray Foundation (gives you a runway-ready look with its innovative mist inspired by the airbrushing techniques used backstage at fashion shows).
  • Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation (unbelievably silky formula creates a natural radiance that captures and reflects light to reveal the look of  photo-ready perfected skin)
  • Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Makeup

Skin should be fresh and glowing!

4.  For a photo ready look you’ll want to hide any redness, blemishes and dark circles. Start with a cooling and soothing metal eye roll-on pen to bring down the dark circles. You’ll want to cover under eye circles and dark spots using a corrector cream as well as a concealer. Look for a product packaged in a duo compact that includes a cream-based formula for coverage and a powder palette. Look for a formula of concealer that is extremely creamy, easy to blend and highly pigmented.  After applying the concealer, dip a clean brush into the powder palette and swipe it under your eyes to set the look. Having the two products in one place is not only convenient but will ensure you don’t skip that essential step. An essential part of any make-up artist’s kit is a flat-shaped corrector brush that gives you control, precision and a non-streaky finish.  You can achieve the full potential of your concealer’s application by thoroughly moisturizing and priming the skin prior to blending. Using a good eye cream under your concealer helps maintain the skin’s moisture levels for a smooth, virtually lineless look. If you skip the eye cream, the concealer pigments can grab on to any dry patches you may have and exponentially increase the chances of creeping and the dreaded dry creepiness after-effects.

My top picks are:

  • Clé de Peau Concelear (the velvety texture of this highly editorialized product and continues to win major awards year after year)
  • Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage concealer (blends sublimely to expertly conceal dark circles, spots and imperfections)
  • Make Up For Ever Full Cover Waterproof Concealer (designed to cover major imperfections like scars, hyper-pigmentation  major discoloration, burns, and tattoos. This light and creamy concealer contains a high concentration of pigments that stay put, making it perfect for use on the face, as well as the body)
  • Amore Pacific Contour Lift Extreme Eye Cream (will lock in moisture and smooth out texture, its restorative quality improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, darkness and puffiness in the delicate eye area)

5. Brighten the face with the tiniest amount of an illuminator just above the cheekbones, and blend well. A sparse hair fan brush will allow you to apply a light dusting of highlighter to your cheekbones. The truly versatile highlighting product that may be worn on its own or layered over other color products for added highlight and dimension that I highly recommend is Albatross by NARS. The soft shimmering color will add instant radiance to any complexion. Also love the Nars Multiple sticks in Copacabana and Luxor! (Seriously, these products do crazy beautiful magical things in the light).

6. Set all this moisture with a small amount of translucent high def powder over the whole face, focusing in particular on the T-zone. Look for a high-performance powder that will ensure flawless skin in any light, and that will provide you with maximum coverage with a smooth, even finish that won’t not crease. For an incredible camera-ready powder try Vichy’s Dermablend Setting Powder. It’s an absolutely invisible and weightless setting powder that seems to literally freeze time. Make Up Forever’s Powder was created specifically for HD technology, this talc-free professional touch-up powder is perfect for use throughout the day to reduce shine and slightly mattify skin.

7. As the eyes are the main focus of these look, make sure to keep the cheeks soft and pretty. Apply blush on the apple of the cheeks and blended upwards and outwards. I love Bésame’s Crimson and Raspberry shades. Apply them lightly for a rosy cheek and follow by loose powder to soften.

8. Frame the face with defined brows by using a powdered eyebrow pencil. Defined brows aren’t going out of style any time soon. Smoky eyes and cat-eyes look best when framed with beautifully groomed eyebrows. Apply using tiny strokes before bushing through to soften the effect.

My top picks for creating artfully applied arches:

  • Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade

Fall's latest incarnation features glossed up eyelids with a hit of shine combined with pretty raspberry stained lips.

9. Next to the eyes: Apply loose powder under the eyes before applying eye shadow to lids. That way, you can easily brush off any fallen eye shadow dust without makeup remover. Blend a neutral shade over the lid. But, keep in mind that the smoky eye has been reinvented for this season using gem tones like sapphire and amethyst instead of charcoal. Not only do these pretty blue-based shades soften the dramatic look, but these hues also make eyes of all colors pop. Contour the eyes with a deeper shade along the crease using a small tapered brush or a smudger. Then add a shimmery tone just under the brow bone and in the inner corner of the eyes to brighten up the entire look for a highlighting and widening effect.  If you really want a bold and sexy look smokey eyes look fantastic if you dampen your brush before you apply. Line the bottom of the lash line using that same darker shadow, with a flat liner brush for a more dramatic look.

My top picks are:

  • Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palettes (My favorite shadows for sexy, vintage look)
  • Lancôme HYPNOSE WATERPROOF – Custom Volume Mascara
  • Vincent Longo’s Crème Gel eyeliner pairs rich pigment with cutting edge gel technology for an ultra-smooth eye-definer that goes on with ease and is water-proof.

10. To make the eyes ‘pop’ even more use a waterproof eyeliner pen on the upper lash line. Remember to use a thinner line on the inner corner of the eye and graduating to a thicker on the outer corner to add ‘lift’ to the eye.  Create a cat eye using a liner brush and a black cream-based liner. From the outer corner, bring it all the way to the tear duct at a 45° angle.  Make sure your application is smooth and precise. Blend and use q-tips and makeup remover to perfect your lines. You don’t want thick and chunky clown-paint eyeliner! Curl lashes and apply a few generous coats of waterproof mascara from the roots of the lash line all the way to the tips.

11. For the perfect pout, start off with a deep, burgundy red. I know, I know this shade will take you a bit out of your comfort zone but, these modern retro looks require it.  Try Clinique’s Black Honey, it has a cult following and you’ll know why when you experience it. It’s a fabulous, sheer berry shade that literally looks good on every bride. The smooth texture is mega-flattering and comfortable to wear as well as moisturizing. You can vamp it up with a matching lip liner or swipe it on blindly for a sheer berry stain. This color is just rich enough to be modern, but soft enough to be timeless. These shades I am recommending are so perfectly glamorous and I promise you that you can rock this lip look if applied correctly.  Exfoliate your lips with a soft toothbrush. Bold lipstick will highlight any dryness or cracking skin. No crusty wedding kisses! Line the lips with a deep colored lip liner all along the natural lines of the lips. Use a lip brush to smooth out the liner.

My top picks are:

  • Too Faced Lip Liner in Perfect Red
  • MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Berry Bold
