Radiant Bride – Give Your Skin a Foundation for Bridal Beauty

On your wedding day, radiant skin translates into wedding-day photos that reflect a bride’s glow inside.  Although I believe inner beauty is the most important quality a bride can have, I see enhancing outer beauty as an outlet for creativity and boosting confidence.

Natural beauty remains the most timeless and sought after look of all. Brides often tell me how they want their wedding makeup to enhance their own beauty, without looking overdone. The fact is that stunning transformations are made possible by healthy and nourishing skin care products that prime the skin. Incorporating a skin care regimen as part of your daily routine is critical to achieving your aesthetic ideal for a flawless canvas for your bridal makeup look.

Skincare Musts

It all begins with moisture balance and regaining the skin’s natural hydration.

Start with Moisture Balance & Regaining of Skin’s Natural Hydration

Hydration and Exfoliation

I highly recommend cleaning your face twice a day with a cleanser or cream matched to your skin type. Pat your face dry and then follow up with a toner and a moisturizer. Layers of makeup applied to dry skin can add years to your appearance and create a cakey look. Improving the skin’s moisture level is a daily ritual, but regular weekly exfoliation will contribute to flawless bridal makeup application. Similar to when one has dehydrated skin and slowed cell turnover, applying makeup over the resulting layer of dead skin cells can cause creases to look more pronounced. Properly executed mechanical and chemical exfoliation can be effective and non-irritating. Improving cell turnover will brighten and even out complexions, enhance hydration and smooth skin so that a luminous finish can be achieved from foundation application.

The benefits of achieving and maintaining proper moisture balance are optimal for skin health and seamless makeup application. Daytime moisturizers should always include sunscreen, and nighttime creams should be rich in vitamin E. An ideal moisturizer is balanced in two sources of skin hydration: humectants and emollients. Humectants are ingredients that attract hydration to the surface layers of the skin. Products rich in hyaluronic acid are the most effective in sealing moisture so that hydration is not lost throughout the day. Emollients contribute immediate softening and smoothing to the skin. Vitamins A and C are common ingredients known to function as emollients.  A cream serves as the protective barrier holding nutrients and the moisture in while at the same time helping to protect from environmental scavengers. Serums have a fundamentally different function than creams. Serums are meant to penetrate and interact with the skin where as a cream is meant to form a protective barrier on the skin.

A good exfoliating/moisturizing mask for brides to use is one that is made of crushed hibiscus and peony flower petals (two ingredients that help skin retain moisture and tighten pores). It should also contain anti-inflammatory chamomile, stimulating and protective green tea extract, nourishing and moisturizing aloe leaf extract and jojoba seed oil. A proper balance of these ingredients provides the nourishment for beautiful skin worthy of enhancing – not concealing – with makeup.

Problem, breakout-prone skin and hyper-pigmentation issues are going to need consistent treatments and an at-home protocol to achieve significant results. Using products containing peptides will support the maintenance of a youthful appearance by strengthening skin’s foundation and multi-tasking to fight both acne and age. Skin brighteners may very well be the answer to our dreams of becoming more comfortable in our own skin with less makeup or even – gasp – going makeup-free. Achieving a more uniform complexion without layers of foundation begins with an effective hyper-pigmentation corrector.  For optimal results, apply your peptide serum as the step immediately after pigment corrector in both your morning and evening skin care routines.

Sun protection is vital to a foundation of bridal beauty.  Make sure you are generously applying your SPF product of choice to your face, neck and décolleté. SPF should be applied over day cream and before makeup. Products should be applied in the following sequence: pigment corrector, anti-aging serum, day cream and then SPF. When applied in this order, the peptides and other active ingredients effectively penetrate the skin for maximum rejuvenation benefits. Choose an antioxidant-rich facial moisturizer containing SPF of at least 30. This will cover 97 percent of UV rays. Antioxidants will neutralize free radicals within the surface layers while SPF reflects UV rays.

Facial: Make an appointment 3 to 4 months before the wedding with a spa or provider where a licensed clinician works on your skin. Let the person performing the service know what products the skin care expert or dermatologist recommended, so the facial can be tailored to avoid aggravation. If you enjoy the experience and clear, smooth skin is the result, consider scheduling regular facial appointments before the wedding.

And finally, DON’T stress yourself out!  Relax!

It seems obvious but you wouldn’t be the first bride to get wound up and stressed out with preparations. Take breaks from your busy schedule for a relaxing bath or treat yourself to a massage.  Your skin is like a photographic diary of your lifestyle, and there is a direct correlation between the skin and the mind. If you start to feel stressed, hit the gym. Exercise balances hormones and boosts the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your skin, which creates a beautiful, healthy glow. Remember beautiful skin is healthy skin so drink plenty of water. When you hydrate your skin from the inside, you help your body to  flush out nasty toxins.
