BRIDAL BEAUTY ON THE GO: Contouring and Highlighting

A beautiful bridal makeup application is all about using makeup to highlight and accentuate your features. This is especially important for photos, as the camera tends to pick up shadows and highlights better than the naked eye.

BRIDAL BEAUTY ON THE GO: Contouring and Highlighting

There are actual contouring and highlighting powders made just for this, but you can also use a bronzer or powder that is a few shades darker than your skin, and a foundation that is a few shades lighter for highlighting. For the most part, your t-zone and under eye area is where you want to highlight, and the outer portion of your face, underneath your cheekbones, and your neck is where you want to define with a darker color. Keep in mind, blending is key for a natural look!

Contact Bridal Makeovers by Aradia for a trial run to see how these techniques can transform you into the beautiful bride you have always dreamed of becoming!

Vamp Up Your Valentine’s Day Makeup!

Valentine’s Day 2015 coincides with the highly anticipated opening of the film Fifty Shades of Grey. So, why not enhance your seductive power with your eye makeup? You’ll need to master the art of making your makeup last during and after every erotic scene. After all Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to do something a little more sensual with your makeup.

If your V-Day plans include getting all dolled up, sexy eyes are the way to go.

Bedroom Eyes

Typically when sex-proofing your makeup, you don’t want your eyes to run.  If the label says “waterproof,” “smudge proof,” or “sweat proof,” you’re going to want to invest. You’ll need to layer your eye makeup products for a bold, longest-lasting smoky eye. Start out by applying an eyeshadow base like Urban Decay Primer Potion all over the eyes. Next apply a matte eyeshadow closest to your skin tone all over the eye. After that, layer a shimmery eyeshadow color similar to the matte one just on the lid and on the brow bone. Then take your main smoky color and with a thick eyeshadow brush like MAC#217 and apply it in a V shape to the outer corners of the eye and in the crease.  Just like your wedding day mascara and eyeliner, you’ll want quality waterproof cosmetics like Make Up For Ever’s Aqua liners. They have real staying power and are available in bold colors. MAC gel liner in Blacktrack is a must and their Naked Pigment shadows are amazing! The ultimate must have to transform your look from soft and innocent to sultry this V-Day is Makeup Forever’s “Give In To Me.” It’s a collection of alluring shades inspired by the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. I recommend protecting your seductive smoky eye with a setting spray.

Happy 4th of July Brides! Top Tips For Freedom From Makeup Meltdowns

Happy 4th of July to My Dearest Brides! The heat can wreak havoc on your bridal makeup. So how can you stop from having a meltdown during your big day?

Red, white and blue makeup is fun to rock on the 4th of July!

Red, white and blue makeup is fun to rock on the 4th of July!

Top Tips for Freedom from Makeup Meltdowns

Keep in mind that heavy, oil-based cosmetics do not wear well in hot weather. Light, shear and waterproof makeup will stay in place longer.

So, always begin with a good skincare regimen. Giving yourself a mask once a week will promote healthy regenerating skin cells, smooth surface skin and a glow because you got rid of all the dead cells.

During the summer, your skin produces more moisture naturally. Heavy creams and thick lotions can make you feel like your skin is suffocating. An essential product for the blazing summer heat (especially recommended for those with oily skin) is an oil free mattifying moisturizer.

Always carry a spritzer to hydrate your skin during those summer months this helps your skin stay hydrated, look dewy and yes even set the makeup you have on. Misting your face with rose water also helps to set your makeup and keep it in place.

Wearing a good primer helps to create barrier between your skin and your makeup, thereby helping your makeup to stay put.

Translucent Powder helps control shine and help sets makeup making it a definite summer staple.

Consider using oil-blotting sheets as they help absorb excess moisture without smudging your makeup.

And finally, waterproof makeup, specifically eyeliner and mascara, helps prevent smudging.

Get The Look

Don’t be afraid to kick off the Fourth of July with a beauty look as bold as the fireworks in tonight’s sky. Apply a bold scarlet color on the lips, this color lipstick was designed for the Fourth of July!  The hot beauty trend this summer is to skip the black eyeliner. It’s just too harsh. Instead, try a deeper-hued shade of blue. Navy or indigo works great.

Keep in mind that blue eyeliner can make blue eyes pop! A navy blue works really well as a chic and modern alternative smokey eye.  The best part is that these hot hues are totally wearable, whether you’re a blonde, redhead, or brunette.

Bridal Faux Lash Extensions – For a Touch of Glamour (Part 2)

Welcome to Part 2: Bridal Faux Lash Extensions – For a Touch of Glamour

Lashes, an infallible, eternal method of seduction – can never be long enough.

Lashes, an infallible, eternal method of seduction – can never be long enough.

All About Lash Extensions

Many brides covet the glamorous look of bold, thick lashes. Beautiful lashes enhance a woman’s natural beauty and draw attention to her eyes, making them one of the most important aspects of her appearance. However, if you would rather not fuss with glue-on faux lashes the day of your wedding…There’s nothing worse than a beautiful bride sporting raccoon circles of mascara around her eyes. And since just about every bride tears up at her wedding, eyelash extensions are the ideal solution to prevent any mascara mishaps! I often recommended getting eyelash extensions and forgoing mascara altogether for the big day. But, there is a difference between to more the expensive “semi-permanent” extensions (around $200-$300 for example the Xtreme Lashes Eyelash Extensions ), and the type that will only stay for a week or two (at most) and that cost about $25-$50. Both, if applied properly, will look gorgeous and natural at the same time and easy enough to do the eye make-up around them the day of the wedding. You just need to careful not to pick, tug, twist, excessively touch or brush your extensions, it could damage your natural lashes. To make the most out of your extensions just remember to choose a reputable salon, spa or eyelash extension only establishment. The lash artist should be a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist and the consultation should be free of charge. Ask what type adhesive is used (it should be non-formaldehyde), and if they have a variety of lashes for customizing. Always make sure they are not applying cluster lashes as lash extensions are one single lash applied to each one of your own.

Please do not get your extensions wet for 24 to 48 hours after the application. If you are having a facial, please do not use steam. The adhesive will reactivate and may cause the lashes to stick together and look like caked-on mascara.

Please do not let moisture-rich products like an oil based hair conditioner or a heavy makeup remover get onto your lashes. This will loosen the bond. Tilt your head back when washing your hair to avoid getting them wet.

Bridal Faux Lash Extensions - What you need to be aware of...

Bridal Faux Lash Extensions – What you need to be aware of…

Do not settle for anything less than the type that is individually applied to each one of your natural lashes. They are light-weight, pre-curled, add length, volume, color and are 100% waterproof. Avoid cheap nail salons claiming to do lash extensions at a ridiculous low price and in a short 15 minute window. This is a sight of pure horror to any trained eyelash extension artist! With the increase in the popularity of lash extensions there has been an equal increase in the amount of un-trained lash stylist offering lash services without proper training or certifications resulting in damaging lash extensions of extremely poor quality. Incorrectly applied lash extensions feel UNCOMFORTABLE, HEAVY, CLUMPY and PAINFUL. They also tend to fall off easily and leave gaps, not to mention they can make your own lashes fall out. When I see these I usually end up having to put in temporary extensions plus waterproof mascara, and pray that it doesn’t turn into a hot mess of glues and gunk on my perfectly applied wedding makeup eyes!

It’s not unusual for me to see severe infections and permanent hair follicle damage on brides that have used this type of lashes. Below is an image of what I am talking about. You should be asking, how they will be applied, and don’t just ask, “Are they individually applied?” If they planning to use flares, they will say they are individual. You must ask if it is one single lash applied to one single natural lash with no sticking together. These types of salons tend to advertise as “individual” lashes but they are actually heavy clusters and flare lashes applied with toxic cheap glue. Each single eyelash extension should be attached only to each single natural hair. There should never be an extension attached to more than one eyelash. The length, thickness and curvature of the lash extensions should be customized and determined by your very own lashes. Improper sizing will cause breakage. Remember each lash separated is essential to healthy natural lash cycling. Ask what they charge and how long it will take. If it is not going to take about 1.5-2 hours to apply a full set, run the other way! That’s why skilled artists charge around $200 for an initial full set, just like your pro bridal makeup application, it takes time, talent and skill.

Eyelash extensions should be applied with your eyes closed. If the procedure is done with your eyes open, it will result in improper application. The glue used during the application should never touch your skin. Since your eyes are shut the whole time lash extensions are being applied, no glue will ever get into your eye. To avoid any irritation, however, the first safety precaution you can take is to be sure that the glue is safe for your eyes and doesn’t contain anything that can harm them, like formaldehyde. Additionally, it’s important to understand the difference between an allergic reaction and an infection. A licensed and experienced lash technician will not let an infection occur, but if you’re allergic to the glue, you’re still going to be allergic.

Bridal Faux Eyelashes For A Touch Of Glamour (Part 1)

My best advice for your eye make up on your wedding day… Faux Eyelashes.

Bridal faux eyelashes are perfect for brides that want to add a touch of glamour to their eyes.

Bridal faux eyelashes are perfect for brides that want to add a touch of glamour to their eyes.

I don’t think I have ever sent a bride away without them. Luscious long lashes that transform the eyes to give a glamorous but natural look are a beauty must have for your big day. There are lots of light, barely there options which enhance your natural lashes as well as more dramatic, glamorous options. I’ve had several brides tell me that they wore them past the wedding and into the first few days of their honeymoon!

Faux Lash Options

Strip lashes are a good option if you want a classic, defined lash and especially works well if you’re going for a subtle liquid liner or a smokey look.

Individual lashes are a popular alternative to strip falsies, creating amazing natural looking lashes with a choice of lengths. Individual faux eyelashes are a great option for brides who want to add a bit of glamour to their eye makeup look on their big day but don’t want to commit to 3-4 weeks and the expense of eyelash extensions. The difference of even 4 or 5 individual lashes on each eye is unbelievable. Individuals give you the choice to add anything from a subtle flutter to full on Va Va Voom! I literally can’t recommend these enough. I absolutely love them!

Are you considering false lashes or extensions for your bridal look? A BRIDAL MAKEOVERS trial run includes a complimentary application of false eyelashes that are natural, subtle, and yet full, giving the perfect finishing touch to your eye makeup. We love to transform our bride’s eyes to give them a glamorous look.

Adding Drama To The Eyes, It’s All About The Eyeliner

When it comes to adding drama to the eyes, it’s all about the eyeliner.

A good eyeliner might be the most important eye makeup tool ever invented.

A good eyeliner might be the most important eye makeup tool ever invented.

In fact, a good eyeliner might be the most important eye makeup tool ever invented. Eyeliner is not only a way to play with color and make a statement, but it’s also the perfect instrument to reshape your eye. Wherever you put darkness is where your eye is drawn to, which means eyeliner allows you to change the shape of your eye. Got small eyes? Make them bigger with a smoky wraparound. Want to elongate your eyes’ width? Do an exaggerated winged tip. The possibilities are endless.

It’s easy to wear a statement look even if you don’t have a steady hand or hours of practice. All you need for this bold look is a long-wear pencil liner in a bright color of your choice. Long-wear liners are usually twist-up pencils, so you can’t control the sharpness of the tip, which prevents drawing a straight edge. However, unlike kohl pencils, long-wear pencils will give you bold matte color that will last for hours. Remember, liners, shadows, and mascaras can end up looking like a hot (smudged) mess at the end of the day if you don’t use a good primer first. Apply the liner to just your lower lash-line from the inner to outer corners, using short strokes. To achieve a precise line: I always start close at the inner corner of the eye. Start thin and gradually get thicker. Always lay the tip on its side at the base of the upper lash line as you draw the line. This will give you more control, which is integral to lining your eyes well.

To pull it into a cohesive look, you can apply eyeshadow in the same color family to your upper lids, but make it two shades brighter. Break up the bright color by applying a thin black line to your upper lash-line and apply mascara. The upper inner rim doesn’t always get as much attention as its lower counterpart, but it’s an equally important area to define. Applying black liner to your upper rim will intensify your lash-line, giving you natural looking definition without the hard edge of a liner. All you have to do is lift up your upper lid, while looking down into a mirror, and apply the black pencil in short strokes. Now, it’s important to keep in mind that I’m raving about the stellar eyeliners of the world, not the ones that bleed, run, last for two minutes, or have zero pigmentation. There are numerous eyeliner options to consider depending the texture, boldness, and application tool you prefer. Just remember to choose an eyeliner that will:

  • Apply easily without skipping or tugging
  • Set to a long-wearing finish that resists smearing and flaking
  • Offer classic and flattering shades
  • And of course, beautifully enhance the eye area

Don’t Let Tears Of Joy Ruin Your Bridal Makeup

Your wedding day is going to be an emotional day so your eyes need to be especially tear-proof, as should the rest of your face.

Don't Let Tears Of Joy Ruin Your Bridal Makeup

Don’t Let Tears Of Joy Ruin Your Bridal Makeup

I always try to choose cosmetics that will go the distance. A base that remains flawless, no matter how many salty tears may flow, is essential. It is important to choose the correct foundation and concealer when you anticipate that you will be crying to prevent problems such as streaking. Unfortunately, the truth is that there really aren’t any cosmetics out there that are 100% guaranteed to withstand streaking. Consequently, I would recommend focusing on making sure you have the proper repair tools for afterwards.

Simply fold a tissue several times and gently blot your face below your lash line, particularly in that leaky inner corner. My advice is to not wipe away tears, but to “brush up” to prevent streaking. Bend your index finger, brushing up along with tissue where the tear is. You’ll need a powder puff to touch up and fix any streaks as long as you pat it dry and don’t wipe it so that the makeup won’t rub off.

The first rule of crying in your makeup is DO NOT RUB YOUR EYES.

No worries… I always use a waterproof sealer for added staying power. The sealers I use are designed for underwater use on special effects makeup and photo shoots. Deiso and Benefit’s “She Laq” with their tear-proof formulas, help keep eye makeup, liners, mascara, even lipstick, from smearing and streaking from tears. These clear, liquid makeup sealers will completely seal your look so your face stays put no matter how many tissues you go through.

I also always use a strong, professional grade makeup sealer on top of my brides’ finished faces for added durability.  My personal preference is Skindinavia for the most advanced technology that is designed to make your makeup stay put, with a unique streak and fade-proof formula, which means that should you wish, you can uncontrollably sob and wail your way through your most important event with no danger of  ‘tear-tracks’ spoiling your look.
