Bridal Faux Lash Extensions – For a Touch of Glamour (Part 2)

Welcome to Part 2: Bridal Faux Lash Extensions – For a Touch of Glamour

Lashes, an infallible, eternal method of seduction – can never be long enough.

Lashes, an infallible, eternal method of seduction – can never be long enough.

All About Lash Extensions

Many brides covet the glamorous look of bold, thick lashes. Beautiful lashes enhance a woman’s natural beauty and draw attention to her eyes, making them one of the most important aspects of her appearance. However, if you would rather not fuss with glue-on faux lashes the day of your wedding…There’s nothing worse than a beautiful bride sporting raccoon circles of mascara around her eyes. And since just about every bride tears up at her wedding, eyelash extensions are the ideal solution to prevent any mascara mishaps! I often recommended getting eyelash extensions and forgoing mascara altogether for the big day. But, there is a difference between to more the expensive “semi-permanent” extensions (around $200-$300 for example the Xtreme Lashes Eyelash Extensions ), and the type that will only stay for a week or two (at most) and that cost about $25-$50. Both, if applied properly, will look gorgeous and natural at the same time and easy enough to do the eye make-up around them the day of the wedding. You just need to careful not to pick, tug, twist, excessively touch or brush your extensions, it could damage your natural lashes. To make the most out of your extensions just remember to choose a reputable salon, spa or eyelash extension only establishment. The lash artist should be a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist and the consultation should be free of charge. Ask what type adhesive is used (it should be non-formaldehyde), and if they have a variety of lashes for customizing. Always make sure they are not applying cluster lashes as lash extensions are one single lash applied to each one of your own.

Please do not get your extensions wet for 24 to 48 hours after the application. If you are having a facial, please do not use steam. The adhesive will reactivate and may cause the lashes to stick together and look like caked-on mascara.

Please do not let moisture-rich products like an oil based hair conditioner or a heavy makeup remover get onto your lashes. This will loosen the bond. Tilt your head back when washing your hair to avoid getting them wet.

Bridal Faux Lash Extensions - What you need to be aware of...

Bridal Faux Lash Extensions – What you need to be aware of…

Do not settle for anything less than the type that is individually applied to each one of your natural lashes. They are light-weight, pre-curled, add length, volume, color and are 100% waterproof. Avoid cheap nail salons claiming to do lash extensions at a ridiculous low price and in a short 15 minute window. This is a sight of pure horror to any trained eyelash extension artist! With the increase in the popularity of lash extensions there has been an equal increase in the amount of un-trained lash stylist offering lash services without proper training or certifications resulting in damaging lash extensions of extremely poor quality. Incorrectly applied lash extensions feel UNCOMFORTABLE, HEAVY, CLUMPY and PAINFUL. They also tend to fall off easily and leave gaps, not to mention they can make your own lashes fall out. When I see these I usually end up having to put in temporary extensions plus waterproof mascara, and pray that it doesn’t turn into a hot mess of glues and gunk on my perfectly applied wedding makeup eyes!

It’s not unusual for me to see severe infections and permanent hair follicle damage on brides that have used this type of lashes. Below is an image of what I am talking about. You should be asking, how they will be applied, and don’t just ask, “Are they individually applied?” If they planning to use flares, they will say they are individual. You must ask if it is one single lash applied to one single natural lash with no sticking together. These types of salons tend to advertise as “individual” lashes but they are actually heavy clusters and flare lashes applied with toxic cheap glue. Each single eyelash extension should be attached only to each single natural hair. There should never be an extension attached to more than one eyelash. The length, thickness and curvature of the lash extensions should be customized and determined by your very own lashes. Improper sizing will cause breakage. Remember each lash separated is essential to healthy natural lash cycling. Ask what they charge and how long it will take. If it is not going to take about 1.5-2 hours to apply a full set, run the other way! That’s why skilled artists charge around $200 for an initial full set, just like your pro bridal makeup application, it takes time, talent and skill.

Eyelash extensions should be applied with your eyes closed. If the procedure is done with your eyes open, it will result in improper application. The glue used during the application should never touch your skin. Since your eyes are shut the whole time lash extensions are being applied, no glue will ever get into your eye. To avoid any irritation, however, the first safety precaution you can take is to be sure that the glue is safe for your eyes and doesn’t contain anything that can harm them, like formaldehyde. Additionally, it’s important to understand the difference between an allergic reaction and an infection. A licensed and experienced lash technician will not let an infection occur, but if you’re allergic to the glue, you’re still going to be allergic.

Bridal Faux Eyelashes For A Touch Of Glamour (Part 1)

My best advice for your eye make up on your wedding day… Faux Eyelashes.

Bridal faux eyelashes are perfect for brides that want to add a touch of glamour to their eyes.

Bridal faux eyelashes are perfect for brides that want to add a touch of glamour to their eyes.

I don’t think I have ever sent a bride away without them. Luscious long lashes that transform the eyes to give a glamorous but natural look are a beauty must have for your big day. There are lots of light, barely there options which enhance your natural lashes as well as more dramatic, glamorous options. I’ve had several brides tell me that they wore them past the wedding and into the first few days of their honeymoon!

Faux Lash Options

Strip lashes are a good option if you want a classic, defined lash and especially works well if you’re going for a subtle liquid liner or a smokey look.

Individual lashes are a popular alternative to strip falsies, creating amazing natural looking lashes with a choice of lengths. Individual faux eyelashes are a great option for brides who want to add a bit of glamour to their eye makeup look on their big day but don’t want to commit to 3-4 weeks and the expense of eyelash extensions. The difference of even 4 or 5 individual lashes on each eye is unbelievable. Individuals give you the choice to add anything from a subtle flutter to full on Va Va Voom! I literally can’t recommend these enough. I absolutely love them!

Are you considering false lashes or extensions for your bridal look? A BRIDAL MAKEOVERS trial run includes a complimentary application of false eyelashes that are natural, subtle, and yet full, giving the perfect finishing touch to your eye makeup. We love to transform our bride’s eyes to give them a glamorous look.

100 Years of Bridal Hair & Makeup Looks – A Vintage Bridal Study

Down The Aisle Style: 100 Years of Bridal Hair & Makeup Looks

Today’s blog attempts to beautifully and chronologically demonstrate with the bridal beauty fashion history from the past 100 years. This year is all about vintage inspired weddings and bridal hair is no exception. As a professional makeup artist dedicated to brides I feel it’s crucial that I share knowledge of wedding trends and styling, so in an attempt to grow my own understanding of what vintage weddings through the past 100 years were all about, I offer you this blog. Since a lot of my brides want a wedding look that expresses their personal style while also reflecting a rich tradition, it’s important being specific about the era a certain wedding is based upon and not simply generalizing all styles to this vague, blurred term that ‘vintage’ is. Nothing achieves that goal as gracefully as vintage hair and makeup. Here is a luscious look at wedding beauty fashions from the turn of the 20th century to the present. Let’s take a look back at the best of the last century.

1913-2013 – A dazzling tour of the past hundred years of bridal fashion.

Bridal vintage style is associated with classy sexiness, youthful wholesomeness, and flawless beauty. Vintage styles have never been more popular, with style icons like Scarlett Johansson to Dita Von Teese indulging in retro glamour. In fact the trend of retro pinup-style clothing, hair, and makeup is emerging in contemporary art, movies, ads, and on the fashion runways. Taking inspiration from burlesque divas and celebrities, so many of our brides seek to enhance their image with the effortless glamour and mysterious charisma of classic pinup beauty. BRIDAL MAKEOVERS Innovative & creative styling to bring you stellar makeup and hair artistry. Specializing in hair and make-up from the 1920’s – 1980’s we can transform you into a jazz era flapper girl, a starlet from Hollywood’s golden age, a rock n roll pin-up or a 60’s sex kitten! We at BRIDAL MAKEOVERS have a passion for beauty from a bygone era yet, love the idea of a vintage style wedding gown and hair with more modern makeup done in fresh ways. TIP: First create an inspiration board that features rouge lip colors that are pulled from a vanity table drawer from long ago, mixed with futuristic glittery eye accents, timeless natural tones and indelible smoky shadows and liners. The idea is you want to mix of old and new makeup techniques for a contemporary yet vintage look. The overall message: pair vintage with modern to make a statement that’s unique and all your own for your bridal makeup.

Adding Drama To The Eyes, It’s All About The Eyeliner

When it comes to adding drama to the eyes, it’s all about the eyeliner.

A good eyeliner might be the most important eye makeup tool ever invented.

A good eyeliner might be the most important eye makeup tool ever invented.

In fact, a good eyeliner might be the most important eye makeup tool ever invented. Eyeliner is not only a way to play with color and make a statement, but it’s also the perfect instrument to reshape your eye. Wherever you put darkness is where your eye is drawn to, which means eyeliner allows you to change the shape of your eye. Got small eyes? Make them bigger with a smoky wraparound. Want to elongate your eyes’ width? Do an exaggerated winged tip. The possibilities are endless.

It’s easy to wear a statement look even if you don’t have a steady hand or hours of practice. All you need for this bold look is a long-wear pencil liner in a bright color of your choice. Long-wear liners are usually twist-up pencils, so you can’t control the sharpness of the tip, which prevents drawing a straight edge. However, unlike kohl pencils, long-wear pencils will give you bold matte color that will last for hours. Remember, liners, shadows, and mascaras can end up looking like a hot (smudged) mess at the end of the day if you don’t use a good primer first. Apply the liner to just your lower lash-line from the inner to outer corners, using short strokes. To achieve a precise line: I always start close at the inner corner of the eye. Start thin and gradually get thicker. Always lay the tip on its side at the base of the upper lash line as you draw the line. This will give you more control, which is integral to lining your eyes well.

To pull it into a cohesive look, you can apply eyeshadow in the same color family to your upper lids, but make it two shades brighter. Break up the bright color by applying a thin black line to your upper lash-line and apply mascara. The upper inner rim doesn’t always get as much attention as its lower counterpart, but it’s an equally important area to define. Applying black liner to your upper rim will intensify your lash-line, giving you natural looking definition without the hard edge of a liner. All you have to do is lift up your upper lid, while looking down into a mirror, and apply the black pencil in short strokes. Now, it’s important to keep in mind that I’m raving about the stellar eyeliners of the world, not the ones that bleed, run, last for two minutes, or have zero pigmentation. There are numerous eyeliner options to consider depending the texture, boldness, and application tool you prefer. Just remember to choose an eyeliner that will:

  • Apply easily without skipping or tugging
  • Set to a long-wearing finish that resists smearing and flaking
  • Offer classic and flattering shades
  • And of course, beautifully enhance the eye area

Even the annual fête, which formally kicks off the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s yearly Costume Institute exhibit injected pure drama and wonderment on May 9th, 2013 as it celebrated with a punk theme. So,  how does this unconventional theme justice and inspire bridal looks? Well… I am a big advocate for brides doing what makes them happy and showcasing their vibrancy and personalities through the makeup and hair. For the past three decades my approach to makeup styles has been heavily inspired by a combination of haute couture and street fashion creations. However, most of my brides are inspired celebrities red carpet looks. So take a look at how this year’s gala punk theme inspired celebrities to leave their usual glowing red carpet beauty looks behind and instead opt for something a tad more experimental. I predict that this is going to take bridal styling  to a whole new level…

But, I am happy to say that I am back and fully focused on writing about some of my favorite subjects – Bridal Fashion, Style and Beauty.

Brides,  if you are avoiding that frosted/metallic/iridescent look and want to add depth, dimension and a flattering cast to your eyes, you’ll need a collection of shadows that are truly matte. I love a neutral palette with shades ranging from light to dark. For a photo-ready look, every bride needs an essential palette of a selection of subtle and smoky shades browns.

Start by blending an ivory shade on the brow bone. Follow with a light taupe or caramel; remember to blend it well on the lid. A muted golden brown is a typical crease color for neutral looks. A deeper brown in the crease to make it look more defined and dramatic. A chocolate brown color is a must, the trick to this shadow is layering the amount you put on your lid. A light layer can give you a subtle daytime look. If you pack on the color, you will get a sultry smoky eye . You can come up with lots of great natural or dramatic combos with these colors! A dark brown-blackish matte eyeshadow is great for smudging along the lash-line to make your lashes look thicker. It turns any daytime look into a night look, and if you blend it in with a matte jet black it adds dimension to eyes. A sultry chocolate palette of dramatic shades, perfect for creating any smoky eye look. Look for shades with velvety/suede finish with amazing color pay-off.

A very pigmented matte dark brown eyeshadow and a creamy bisque shade should be a staple in everyone's collection.

A very pigmented matte dark brown eyeshadow and a creamy bisque shade should be a staple in everyone’s collection (in my opinion).
