Vidal Sassoon: Loss Of A Legend

"If you don’t look good, we don’t look good.” Vidal Sassoon

"If you don’t look good, we don’t look good.” Vidal Sassoon

How true of a statement this is! Vidal Sassoon, the man who made hairdressing “hip” and an “art” died 2 weeks ago, but not before leaving his mark on the world of fashion.

Hairdressing the ‘Sassoon’ way means working with the hair in its natural state and giving the wearer a hair style that works precisely for their style and ease. This was a totally new concept back in the 60’s. Vidal Sassoon was the innovator of ‘wash and wear hair’ therefor freeing women from the subjection of a weekly visit to the hair salon.

“My idea was to cut shape into the hair, to use it like fabric and take away everything that was superfluous.” Vidal Sassoon

When Mr. Sassoon entered the beauty world he understood that for most women, a trip to the hairdresser meant having their hair slathered in Dippity-do, going under a dryer with hair set in tight, prickly brush-rollers for at least an hour, and then having their locks coiffed and teased mercilessly into a sort of  helmet-head hair style guaranteed to hold in place till the following weeks appointment. He started to think about hair and the client in an entirely new way.  Vidal Sassoon became a pioneer in the world of hairstyling by turning it upside-down with his new visions and concepts.

Vidal was inspired by modern architecture; the way the structure of buildings graced the land, ushered the modernist angles into his early hairstyling techniques. He translated this into the way he did hair. He knew how to create art on someone’s head that suited their bone structure and face shape. This is something that is not simply taught, but a gift that you are born with.

I have to be honest, it totally makes me smile when I think of this iconic gentleman slapping a clients hand away with the comb if they tried to touch it mid-cut or mid-style. He also lost patience when his clients gave too much input and once threw his shears in the air out of frustration, and they stuck in the ceiling! Classic!
